Greenrigg Community Woodland

Almost 5,000 trees have been planted at Greenrigg Community Woodland in West Lothian by the Central Scotland Green Network Trust (CSGNT) thanks to the People’s Postcode Trust.

CSGNT was awarded £6,052 by the grant-giving charity which is funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The funding was combined with financial support from the Scotland Rural Development Programme and West Lothian Villages Improvement Fund to create 2.42 hectares of new woodland on the edge of Greenrigg, West Lothian.

This is the second phase of tree planting at Greenrigg Community Woodland and 4,845 broadleaved and coniferous trees were planted to enhance the existing woodland which was created in 2010.

Deer fencing has also been erected around the new planting to stop the trees being damaged by browsing, with public access still available into the new greenspace. This phase of planting connects to the original woodland and the existing path network.

CSGNT’s mission is to drive forward the delivery of Europe’s largest greenspace initiative, the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN) and Keith Geddes, Chair of the CSGNT explained the importance of projects such as Greenrigg Community Woodland.

Keith Geddes said: “The CSGNT supports a wide range of environmental enhancements across the central belt of Scotland to increase woodland creation in the area and to create valuable greenspace resources for local communities to enjoy.

“This project will allow the Greenrigg community, including the adjacent Greenrigg Primary School, to exercise, explore and relax in the woodland, improving their health and mental well-being, and the new woodland will also enhance the habitat network and mitigate climate change.”

People’s Postcode Lottery is a charity lottery, where players play with their postcodes to win cash prizes while raising money for good causes.  As a charity lottery, 50p from every £2 ticket goes to support charities and good causes across England, Scotland and Wales, including People’s Postcode Trust. People’s Postcode Lottery believes in supporting local communities so the money raised stays local to players.
