Locals come out to support pump track world championship event at former vacant and derelict site in North Lanarkshire.
The Red Bull Pump Track Championships took place in Craigneuk at the Wishawhill Wood Pump Track on 17 August, as world class riders entered the UK qualifier at the newly installed track facility.
The site was derelict land two years ago but over 60 riders and 350 spectators turned out to enjoy a high class event, an outcome that exceeds all the expectations from when the track was proposed, primarily as a facility for local teenagers. The track is managed by Socialtrack, a Community Interest Company, and has the overwhelming support of Craigneuk community council, the police, fire service; indeed all those that have seen the transformation it has made in young people’s lives.
The event itself was full of quality with the woman’s race being won by former BMX World Champion Dasha Polakova, from Slovakia. The men’s race was won by reigning UK pumptrack champion Mark Ducat, a 17 year-old from Glasgow. They both won an expenses paid trip to the world finals in Switzerland in October.
Whilst the track reverts to being ‘just’ a community facility again, it continues to be a catalyst for the CSGN. A new green active travel route is under construction linking the site to Wishaw town centre, and the extension of this route to Ravenscraig is being planned over the next six months.
